[Anime Review] Shingeki no Kyojin.

One day I was looking for good anime, and searching through some websites, it came to me that the latest thing the kids were going for was, among others, one named Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan is the more english friendly name). The promo picture (take note of that, marketeers) was beautiful and intriguing, so I decided to go for it. Though it was an action type of anime, and I actively filter my way through them nowadays, I decided to give it a go because it definitely had a type of different flavor to it, like Berserk series, for instance.

But, ready to be downed by another one run of some good episodes and then some not so good ones, I was really in for a treat.

Boy, what a treat.

Ok, for a brief synopsis: humanity lives during hard times (when are times ever not hard?). The remnants of what was the human race live secluded inside humongous walls and gates, and outside, of what was once the 'free' Earth are... titans. Yeah, you heard (read?) it right. Titans, huge humanoid things that, just to make things a little more ridiculous, like to search and eat human beings. Yeah. It´s that fucked up. And so we hide inside those walls, in order to keep those beastly things outside.

But you just know that wasn´t work forever right?

Yeah, it goes pretty much about 20 minutes in the first episode, and the gate is already destroyed by a more humongous giant (giant, titan?) that those that they were familiar with. And then all hell breaks loose. The city our protagonist and deuteragonist, and tritagonist, comes from is totally destroyed by hordes of titans, and they have to flee inside another wall, kilometers and kilometers away, while our hot headed protagonist vows to kill all titans he ever comes upon in the future, when he becomes stronger (by now, he is little more than a teenager), and also learns how to do it.

Analysis.

The anime is a serious piece of contemporary art. It mixes all kinds of genres, in one great narrative. You have your action, drama, horror, both psychological and a bit of gore, a mystery, and more. The only thing missing is that this is a serious story, depicting serious moods and feelings, so, the fanservice is non-existent and there is no ecchi involved - not that the fan art hasn´t take care of that, mind you. But anyways.

You have questions to be answered - where do the titans come from? Why do they hunt human beings (and only human beings)?, and many more. You have social commentary, of so many types  and forms it would be foolish to try and list it all here. Plus you have good action and drama, dressed onto one of the most incredible graphics and animation I´ve seen the last couple of years. The action and intensity is such that you can´t help to get on the edge of your sit, for the duration of the episodes. It´s mind blowing.

Is there any problem with it?

Not all is perfect, but this anime gets close to it. There are a few (just a few) suspensions of disbelief in the "realism" of it, but that´s about it - and one unnecessary scene (involving Levi and the protagonist, Eren Yager in a trial) that goes beyond what was supposed to be before becoming ridiculous, but that´s it. Other than that, this anime is all in all, a veritable work of art. (By realism, I of course mean the parts that there are no giants involved, the interaction, the rules of physics, the explanations, etc).

So do yourself a favor a go watch Shingeki no Kyojin, now - if you are a fan of anime, I´m definitely sure you will enjoy it.

Positive Points:
- Great art;
- Great animation;
- Great action;
- Thrilling;
- Good characters;
- A good mystery to be solved so far;

Negative Points:
- An exaggeration in some parts may take away some of the "realism" which is a downer;

Rating - 5 crows!

  1. Overhyped anime titles tend to be mediocre, but I must say that Shingeki no Kyojin definitely deserves the hype. Like you, the action keeps me on the edge of my seat, primarily because I just don't know who'll die or live.

  2. Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. Love this AoT anime, love the Attack on Titan cosplay costumes in www.cosplayfield.com!
